Dear Mr State Secretary Dan Niculaescu, Your Excellency Monseniour
Miguel Maury Buendia – Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Your Excellencies, my Dear colleagues – Ambassadors and Representatives of the diplomatic missions, beloved compatriots, 27 years ago, on March 2, 1992, the national tricolor flag of Armenia was proudly hoisted on the United Nation’s Headquarters building in New York to announce that the Armenia reappeared on the political map of the world as an independent and sovereign state and joined the UN, thus fulfilling the aspirations of our people to become a full-fledged member of the international community.
It is no coincidence that this symbolic day has been declared and is traditionally celebrated as the professional holiday of the Armenian Diplomats. During these years and up to the present, Armenian diplomats have proudly carried tremendous responsibility to protect the interests of independent Armenia, and those of its citizens, to confront and retort the challenges we have been facing.
This year Armenian Diplomat’s Day celebration symbolically coincide
with the 100th anniversary of the Union of Armenians of Romania that was officially founded in 1919 with willingness of the Romanian State. After the first Republic of Armenia ceased to exist, Armenia’s diplomatic presence in Romania continued until 1924. The Consul General of Armenia in Bucharest Haroutiun Khndiryan, who also was one of the leaders of the Union of Armenians in Romania, went on carrying his responsibilities acting as a link with the Romanian authorities and, most importantly, doing his utmost to assist the Armenian refugees who narrowly escaped the Genocide in the Othoman
Turkey and found safe haven in Romania, the first country in the world
which officially offered on the state level asylum for them.
That was why earlier today the Embassy, the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, the Union of Armenians in Romania and the Diocese of the Armenian Church in Romania paid tribute to the first Consul General’s memory at a wreath laying official commemoration ceremony in the Armenian Cemetery of Bucharest.
Dear friends, it is our pleasure to host you all here, at this small reception dedicated to the Armenian Diplomat’s professional day. I would like to give a special thanks to my colleagues from the MAE of Romania with whom we invest our joint efforts to elevate the Armenian-Romanian political dialogue and overall cooperation to a new level and further enhance the friendly bilateral relations between our nations.
I would also like to extend my congratulations to the Union of Armenians of Romania, represented by Mr. Varujan Vosganian and wish the Union continued success în their important endeavors that lie ahead în its very important activities and thanks for their for its much valued support in organizing this event.
Thank all of you for being with us on this remarkable day. Enjoy it!
Speech delivered on the occasion of the Diplomat Day, celebrated at the
